How to preprare for technical interview? 9 tips from our technical recruters

There are several steps you can take to make sure you are prepared for a technical interview at a software company. Here are some of them:

1. Theoretical preparation. 

Make sure you have a solid foundation of knowledge in the technologies. This includes understanding of the core concepts, data structures and algorithms.

Be prepared for theoretical questions about the technologies you have mentioned in your CV. 

Also, be fully prepared and demonstrate the knowledge of core issues related to a given technical field. Provide various examples regarding your previous projects and how you operated it.
Anyone can learn any definition by heart, but a real-life example will be the best.

If you use this technology for the first time, you can write some simple examples for yourself (like a piece of code). This will help you to get acquainted with the actual structure and operation of a particular format. 

2. An overview of your projects.

Be ready to discuss your work experience. You'll be asked to provide more details about the projects you've worked on. Remember, what kind of projects they were? What technologies and tools were used in them?

Have you had an unusual experience? Mention about this! Think about how it can help you in the job you are applying for. 

3. Troubleshooting.

When you perform tasks in a programming language, you should understand how to read and write good code.

Before the interview, practice solving problems on different platforms. Here are some of them: CSSBattle, Codeforces.
Important! Remember that you are demonstrating your screen while doing the test task. Try to keep this in mind and close suspicious tabs :)


4. Analyze current knowledge.

This is optional, but your reviewers will definitely appreciate your knowledge of trends and changes in technologies you are familiar with. This might include recent updates in languages, tools, or frameworks, etc.

5. Assisting. 

If you have a friend or mentor who is an experienced programmer, ask them to give you a simulated technical talk. This will help you gain confidence and prepare for different scenarios.

Another good option is to watch some interview examples on YouTube. It provides a huge variety of different content, so you can analyze it from different perspectives.

6. No stress!

Treat the technical recruiter as a future colleague. You usually don't stress out in front of work colleagues, do you?  Try to be calm and confident during the interview.

7. Be Honest.

Remember that you are talking to the same people who can see if you are trying to cheat. 

Your honesty is an opportunity to adequately assess your real skills, as well as match you with the right project.

8. Technical problems.

Technical problems can affect any of us - your Internet provider too. Have a modem or cell phone handy to rewire if necessary.

9. FAQ and feedback.

An interview is based on asking questions, and it works both sides. So, don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Information about the tools used, equipment, work culture or business processes will help you make a good decision.
